Former UCF redshirt freshman defensive lineman Mason Cholewa (97) sheds a block during the first home game of the 2018 football season on Sept. 8 at Spectrum Stadium. Cholewa has entered his name into the transfer portal after opting out of the 2020 season.

Redshirt junior defensive lineman Mason Cholewa announced he is entering his name into the transfer portal via twitter on Monday.

Heupel announced in a press conference on Sept. 1 that Cholewa was one of 10 UCF football players opting out of the 2020 season due to COVID-19 concerns.

“I also want to thank my teammates and coaches and especially the academic staff for not only making me a better football player but making me a better man,” Cholewa said in his twitter statement.

The 6-foot-7 lineman was entering his fourth year in the Knights football program. He spent his freshman year with the scout team in 2017 before making his debut in 2018 against the University of Connecticut, according to UCF Athletics

As a Knight, Cholewa played a total of 21 games. He recorded 19 total tackles in his career on the defensive line. As a redshirt freshman, he recorded eight tackles and broke up three passes.

The Pittsburgh native recorded one and a half sacks and two quarterback hurries during the 2019 season, according to ucfknights.com.
