Saget’s last performance was one day before his death at the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall near Jacksonville, Florida.
“I grew up around that venue and have never seen it so packed,” said Chris Miller, a '07 UCF alumnus who was at Saget's last show. “He got a standing ovation at the end.”
Saget mentioned UCF during his final set and told the audience he tested a lot of his material at his performance at the university in 2006 and 2016, Miller said.
“The fact that UCF held such a special place in his heart that years later he still recalled his time there shows that UCF was a key memory for him,” Miller said.
Miller said Saget spoke about fellow comedian Norm Macdonald’s death during his set, which was over two hours.
“It was ironic that he mentioned his friend’s passing and then less than 24 hours later he passed away,” Miller said. “I’m not a doctor, but he seemed healthy.”
Miller said that Saget did not sit down for his extensive performance until he played guitar. He also said he did not remember seeing a water bottle on stage while he performed.
Ashley Harding, a UCF '10 alumna and News4Jax morning reporter, has a fond memory of seeing Saget in 2006.
“It was a night I remember from college,” Harding said. “I grew up with him as my TV dad from ‘Full House,’ so it was shocking that his set was so raunchy.”
Harding said Saget's packed performance at UCF in 2006 had the audience very engaged, and he was the first standup comedian that she went to see.
Harding received her assignment to cover Saget’s death at the venue where he gave his last performance.
“I was shocked when I heard about his passing, especially because he had just been on our morning show days before,” Harding said.
Harding’s coworker at News4Jax, Bruce Hamilton, went to college with Saget. Hamilton conducted Saget’s last interview.
“It was such a shock to everyone, but I’m glad that my colleague Bruce got that last chance to connect with him,” Harding said.
Saget’s last Instagram post was a selfie on stage at his last performance at Ponte Vedra Concert Hall. He wrote in the caption that he was excited to continue touring and listed dates for upcoming performances.
"His last post told me that he had a lot of hope for what was to come for himself," Harding said. "It's just sad that he didn't get to share his talent longer."
According to the Orange County Sheriff's Office, Saget's cause of death is pending investigation, but foul play and drug use were not immediately suspected.
